The thinking skill for project 3 was reasoning.
Reasoning is the perfect thinking skill to base your project on something controversial. My partner Peyton, and I decided to choose the topic on religious faith and medical treatment. Some religions don't allow their followers to accept medical treatment because it goes against their "lifestyles." My partner and I wanted to find out where in a religious scripture it says that one cannot medicate and why people follow faith though it could harm their loved ones or themselves.
The religion we focused on is Christian Science.

What is Christian Science?
Christian Science is a form of Christianity, but it focuses more on the healing powers of prayer.
English
The original idea for our English product was to write a short story. The story was about a woman named Ember who got diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She refuses treatment and relies on prayer to heal herself from cancer. Ember's parents and Ember are the main conflict of the story. We wanted her to have inner conflict with herself about using God and only God to heal. She would eventually question her God because as the story goes on, her health dwindles.
Due to lack of motivation and timing, we decided to write journal entries instead. Journal entires are another word for a diary entry. The product change would be a better choice to show reasoning due to Ember's thoughts and actions shown in her entries.

The first picture is my partner and I throwing out ideas for the possible events in the story. Obviously, the board is super disorganized and that there were barely any confirmed ideas yet.
The second slide is the official story line. This was before we decided that we wanted to make the short story into journal entires. The board was organized in scenes so Peyton and I could split the work and know what to write so we don't get confused. Although we changed the format of the product, the plot was still the same. |
History
In this project, we learned about mind mapping. Mind mapping is a form of organizing information while thinking critquically about your project. The first three sentences in the picture below are from the perspective of a person practicing Christian Science. Then, a question "Why do people use their emotions over facts when making a medical decision?" Under the question, we chose three general reasons for the question. "Religious Indoctrination, Emotions are easier to understand than facts, Personal experiences with medicine." The three reasons became subject points for information.

Peyton's Notes:
|
Our planned product was create annotations for the journal entires our character Ember writes. The annotations consist of the psychology of decision making. The first few pages of the document below is my research process. The last couple of pages are the annotations in the story.
Art
My partner and I decided to make something physical. Our first thought was to work with clay and make something abstract, but as we were continuing our research about medicine, we had to make our own medication or medicine bottle.
We used empty medication bottles from our homes. We had to sneak them in so we didn't get in trouble by the school... Scratching off the labels was a pain, but they weren't a roadblock. Mr. Grandi helped us find labels so we can print on our prescriptions. During the label making process, which was such a hassle, we decided to make medication for the bottles. We used the 3D printer to make small religious symbols. The symbols were Star of David and The Crucifix.

For more information about the process of making the labels, check out Peyton's website!
The labels are suppose to replicate prescription labels. The name "Ember Jones" is the name of our character who writes in her journal about her Christian Science journey. "Somerville Ave, MA" is the location of the first church to practice Christian Science. John14;12 is the verse to heal Ember, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." At the bottom of the bottle, it says "Holygreens" which is a parody of Walgreens. The phone number is rumored to be Jesus' phone number.
