The thinking skill for this project is synthesizing.

Since it is a requirement to write a college research paper, I decided to make my whole project about college. At first, I didn’t know where to start with history and art since I already had my english product planned out.
History
After high school, I am going to college to become an art therapist. I’m glad I figured out what I wanted to do before the end of my high school career. Though it took me quite a while to determine my future career. Even if I didn’t find out, my mom would still make me go to college no matter what. Since I had that conflict for so long, I wondered if anyone felt the same as I did. I asked my peers what they wanted to do after high school. Most of them said to go to college, but they couldn’t figure out what career they were thinking of pursuing. After asking my peers, I wanted to shine a light on the confusion and lack of understanding about schooling and jobs young adults have after their required education.
|
My research consisted of information about why everyone should go to college versus why they shouldn’t. After the research, I realized that the reason why people don’t want to go to college is that they weren’t motivated in high school and they are afraid of wasting time at college unfocused. Another factor about enrolling in college is how much it costs. I also researched trade schools; that are limited to learning about one career. My question was, “What about the students who don’t know what to do with their future?” With the help of Mr. Wimmer, the product idea was to make my own school that would be available to everyone, especially the people who don’t know what to do after high school.

While researching, I found out that most jobs that don’t require a college education, they require certain skills, but some people don’t have those skills to find a career. In my school, students will learn about skills they may or may not have learned while growing up. In my school, students are required to take all classes available the first two years of school. My class ideas were based on the interests of my peers and skills I think are valuable for an adult. The classes that are available to freshmen: Basic Training, Culinary, English, Modern Communication, Modern Technology, and Y.O.U. Career.
My hope for the students who attend these classes is for them to figure out what they want to do with their future. Each class is different from each other, and I believe that the classes provided will help spark interest in the student. The ideal purpose for my school is to be a transition from high school to college, or for someone who isn’t satisfied with the job they have and want to gain education without spending four years at school.

Room Design
Moving onto campus will be quite nerve-wracking because I will have to call an unfamiliar place my home for two semesters. The fact that I might have to share a room with a stranger is also scary, and I know I will have to overcome these fears. To overcome my fears, I decided to create my dorm room.
I created a room based on the dimensions of the dorm rooms I chose from Eastern Mennonite University, Ohio Wesleyan, and York College. The shape of the room looks like a “P” in bubble font. The bottom part of the room has part of the dimensions of one of the dorm rooms at York College.
Eastern Mennonite University requires students to share a dorm room, so I will base my room on sharing with another person. I placed a bunk bed, two laundry baskets and a large drawer for two individuals in the room. I placed one desk near the door due to limited space in the dorm, I also placed a coffee table in front of the couch for another study area. On the tv table, there are candles and tissues to replicate life in the room. A Wii gaming system and a DVD player are also on the tv table for entertainment for me and my roommate. Near the tv stand and lamp, there is a fan and heater tower to fight against the temperature of the room.
Posters and decorations fill the bare parts of the room to distract me from the standard walls the college provides. On the wall in front of the drawer, I added a paint storage unit to keep all of the paints I will be working with together. Next to my desk, there is a drying rack for my wet paint pieces. I also made sure to add a lot of floor space without carpet because I like to work on the floor and I don’t want to worry about messing up the carpet.

Before I finished my product, I created some tests runs. The gray room with the single bed is a dorm room based off of one the rooms in York College. The red room is my first creation. I didn't plan out the structure and shape of that room... |
English
One of the requirements in English three is to create a paper researching different colleges. The least amount of colleges to research is three. The paper can be organized however you want, as long as it makes sense. You have the option to choose a college, or stay undecided in the paper. The research has to be evaluated by three or more factors. For example, you research a college based on the cost, the campus, and the dorms. Each school you research will include information about the factors you chose, then you would evaluate the school.
It was hard to decide which colleges I wanted to pick because I didn't think about college that much. I eventually looked on a website called "Captain U." This site helps athletes get noticed by colleges. Only two out of the three schools have looked at me on Captain U. The three schools I picked were Eastern Mennonite University, Ohio Wesleyan University, and York College of Pennsylvania. The factors I based my research paper were on the location, student/classroom size and the school's art program. I organized the paper by sections titled with the school name.
